And would a love scene have the same effect if it were accompanied by threatening tones? Even these two questions show: music doesn't just accompany a film. It changes how we understand its images.

In Sound Worlds Episode 40 Alfred and Johannes are talking about film music and classical music. Their guiding question is: Are the two the same as soon as a large orchestra plays? The short answer: not automatically. However, both areas can overlap.

„However, the casual statement that film music is classical music cannot be left as it is.“

– Alfred

The short answer first

Film score is composed for a film or selected for it. Their most important task is to support the visuals and the plot.

Classical music belongs to a long musical tradition. Many of their works were written for the concert hall and follow a structure of their own.

Both can come together: A film score can use classical techniques, and a work by Schubert can suddenly take on a new meaning in a film.

So it is not about which music is „better“. What matters is its origin, its structure, and its function. The article about absolute music in sound worlds episode 29 explains the conceptual background.

How film music came to the cinema

The first films did not yet have a recorded soundtrack. Therefore, a pianist often sat in the cinema. He selected suitable pieces, drowned out the clatter of the projector, and gave the images more emotion.

In 1908 Camille Saint-Saëns wrote music for The Assassination of the Duke of Guise. He tailored it precisely to the individual scenes. The work is considered one of the earliest film scores by a composer who was already famous at the time.

Later, directors and composers worked more and more closely together. A well-known example are Sergei Eisenstein and Sergei Prokofiev with Alexander Nevsky and Ivan the Terrible. More information can be found in the article about the History of film music.

How music changes our view of images

Let's imagine an empty house. Soft strings might make it feel cozy. Deep, unsettling tones make that same house seem dangerous. The images remain the same – but their meaning changes.

A simple classification shows three possibilities:

The music enhances the image Fast music accompanies a car chase, for example.

The music interprets the image – Polarization: Only the music decides whether the empty house feels welcoming or threatening.

The music contradicts the image – contrapuntal use: A cheerful melody accompanies a violent scene, thereby creating irony or unease.

Five terms explained simply

Score: film score.

Mood: Music that primarily creates a mood.

Underscoring: Music that follows the action very closely.

Mickey Mousing a particularly precise form of underscoring. Almost every movement gets a matching sound. The article on this shows more about Music in animation.

Leitmotif a short melody or sequence of notes that is consistently associated with the same character or idea – such as the shark motif in Jaws.

If a radio is playing in a scene, the characters also hear the music. There is a technical term for this diegetic music. Music that only the audience hears is called nondiegetic.

– Johannes

„Barry Lyndon“: falsche Zeit, richtige Wirkung

Stanley Kubricks Barry Lyndon spielt im 18. Jahrhundert.

Camille Saint-Saëns: The Assassination of the Duke of Guise, gespielt vom Ensemble Musique Oblique.

Sergej Prokofjew: Filmmusiken aus der Zusammenarbeit mit Sergej Eisenstein.

Maurice Jarre: Musik zu David Leans Doktor Schiwago.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Klaviersonate C-Dur KV 545, gespielt von Leon McCawley.

Franz Schubert: „Gute Nacht“ aus der Winterreise und das Klaviertrio Es-Dur D 929, op. 100, gespielt vom Trio La Gaia Scienza.

Dmitri Schostakowitsch: Walzer Nr. 2 aus der Suite für Varieté-Orchester in Eyes Wide Shut, gespielt vom Russian State Symphony Orchestra unter Dmitry Yablonsky.

Ein Hörtest für den nächsten Film: Was würde eine Szene ohne ihre Musik bedeuten – und was verändert sich, sobald die Musik einsetzt?

Film music and classical music compared: Schallwelten Episode 40 explains leitmotifs, sonata form, and Kubrick's use of music – clearly and comprehensibly.

[47
55,58,56,53,57
60
post-3364","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-podcast-folgen","tag-filmmusik","tag-franz-schubert","tag-klassische-musik","tag-schallwelten","tag-stanley-kubrick

Filmmusik und klassische Musik | Schallwelten Folge 40

<meta property="og:title" content="Ist Filmmusik klassische Musik?
